ADaM is compiling a comprehensive and illustrated syllabus of Janet’s Panetta’s Ballet for Contemporary Dancers class
OUR MANIFESTO
JANET PANETTA (1948-2023) studied ballet with Antony Tudor and Margaret Craske at the Metropolitan Opera Ballet School. She was a member of American Ballet Theater and performed in the companies of choreographers, Paul Sanasardo, Neil Greenberg and Susan Salinger, among others. She also choreographed and performed her own work.
She taught her unique and popular Ballet for Contemporary Dancers class in New York City and abroad from 1973-2022, and many of her devotees studied with her for decades.
WE ARE Sri Louise Coles, Luz Marina Diaz, Johari Mayfield and Alice Stock Katsigiannis. We have been devoted students of Janet Panetta since the mid 1990’s. We are the original cast of her final choreographic work, Desire and Resignation, 1996, which we recreated and performed for her in 2022 at the Arts On Site gala, honoring her.
We are the core Advisory Board of the Contemporary American Dance Museum’s (ADaM’s) current program, which Janet entitled, The Art of Teaching Dance.
WE BELIEVE Janet Panetta was an important figure in dance history. We believe her unique pedagogical concepts, teaching methods and signature ballet exercises should be gathered into a syllabus, and taught to future generations of dancers and dance teachers to come. So, together with Janet, we began the process of compiling her syllabus in 2022.
OUR PROCESS
We meet twice a week to discuss Janet’s pedagogy and to remember and practice her ballet exercises. Artist, Carol Prud’homme Davis, also a member of ADaM’s Advisory Board and our Resident Artist, documents the exercises through her live-drawn illustrations.
OUR GOALS are to preserve Janet’s pedagogy for posterity, by documenting it, studying it, and teaching it; and to create a Janet Panetta’s Ballet for Contemporary Dancers Syllabus book, illustrated by Carol Prud’homme Davis.
Below are live-drawn Gesture illustrations by Artist in Residence, Carol Prud’homme Davis, from the First Annual Janet Panetta Memorial Ballet Class held at Gibney Dance Center on December 13, 2023.
Nearly 100 dancers attended live and via Zoom from the United States and Europe. Thank you, Katy Pyle (Ballez), for so generously donating your ballet class for this event!
